Early Maps of North America CD

If you are interested in learning how America was transformed from tiny, fragmented territories to a mighty nation, grab this CD today!

This CD tells the story of how the United States developed from patchy colonial beginnings, when European explorers fought for territorial supremacy. Strange as it may sound, this story is told not through words alone, but through a set of the best and most authentic maps of North America from the 18th century!

As the war for colonization of North America escalated, the French and the British were driven by a strong urge to demarcate territories and document these by way of producing accurate and precise maps of their territories.

This CD is a compilation of the best and most accurate of these maps. Each was based on a survey carried out by some of the best talent of the time. A thoroughly enjoyable study of North America!

The maps that you will examine in this historic CD are the works of renowned surveyors, cartographers and publishers of the 18th century.

Between them, the maps cover, in great depth, the history and geography of the entire continent between the Atlantic and the Pacific oceans. The meticulously engraved works carry details of boundaries, cities, towns, forts, trade routes and at times vegetation of the territory.

A comprehensive commentary that appears with most maps provides in-depth information about the period the map belongs to, the nationality of the territory and the names of the engraver and publisher.

All the maps, without exception tell a story and the notes included in some maps provide additional historical detail, references to symbols and information on territorial claims. You will see one of the earliest maps, which shows California as a part of the main land and not an island.

You can examine the westward progress of the territories and peep into the territorial dominance of Indian tribes. The inclusion of maps of the West Indies speaks volumes of the territorial ambitions of the Europeans.

The French entered the war against England on the side of the Americans in 1777 following the Battle of Saratoga, but even before that, they followed the events of the American Revolution very closely. Thus, it is not surprising that there were some excellent maps of North America issued by the French during the early part of the 18th century. The credit for the best mapping of North America from the 1750s on, however, goes to the British.

The 89 maps that you will examine in this CD have been selected from the best of French and British sources. These maps record the history of North America in the 18th Century in a charmingly informative manner.

Designed by some of the leading surveyors of the times, the maps talk of colonial conquests of Britain, Spain and France and their continual struggle for territorial dominance. Maps of large territories that were occupied by Indians at the time are also included and are storehouses of information on the geographical distribution of American tribes.

Two outstanding features of the maps on this wonderful 'atlas' are the eye for detail and the apparent shift in political power as the century progressed.

Many of the maps show a relatively accurate physical outline of North America, providing students of this era with valuable historical markers.

Viewing these maps was, for me, like reading a history book with each map bearing testimony to an era when the colonies were struggling for an identity of their own. This CD is an extremely informative and exhaustive collection of maps of North America from the 18th century, and is certain to delight students of history with many hours of fruitful investigation.

"The thought that I could study the history of a continent by merely studying maps on a CD never crossed my mind, before I stumbled upon this amazing CD at a friend's. It contains a good "narrative" of how American colonies changed hands and shape over the century depicted in this CD."

"The maps are comprehensive in their content - roads, rivers navigational routes - you name it, its there on one or the other map. A progressive push towards the west is also evident if you study these maps chronologically. It's amazing to see how history unfolds before your eyes through these maps. The added comments on most maps are informative and useful to a novice like me in understanding the significance of the maps. This was an unexpected treat!"

"Obviously a lot of time and effort has gone into the compilation of this fabulous collection of historic maps on a CD. The selection of maps is both relevant and thematic - covering just over a century of America's history."

"Historic maps have always fascinated me. The joy of identifying a territory, as you know it now from a strange looking map has always thrilled me. I am not through with viewing all the maps on this CD, but from past experience I know that I don't have to worry about their quality. If it is from, its bound to be great! I look forward to many hours of enjoyable examination of these maps!"
